Interior Designer, Artist at a Glance

On any given weekend, Marjorie takes a break from remodeling and design to work on creating pastel art, her other passion. If you wander into her gallery she will talk as she paints, and explain both the art of pastels and her interior design projects that are in progress – in Grand County and beyond.

The gallery is loaded with framed images and an abundance of color: from fabrics and furnishings to design boards of homes she is working on. The store is a working studio with the art easel right in the middle. Part of her business is the art that she often places in her projects. “Large colorful art is hard to find in design. I can paint to match the fabrics, or also add meaningful pieces to a home like pet paintings and memorable scenes from trips taken,” she says.

Marjorie began drawing at age four and continued using her gift throughout her life, with the style of impressionism most in her mind as she paints local and international scenery. Using soft pastels, she says that, “They call it painting, but it’s a drawing medium to me.”

The art enhances her profession as an interior designer. She has found that she sees color differently than many people because of her experience in mixing colors for her artwork. For instance, she can see red undertones, or green in paints that may make a huge difference when on a wall … and light hits paint differently causing it to change. The colors in a room all have to be in harmony from cabinets to walls to tile, and all surfaces inside and outside of a home. When she is working on a turnkey remodel, the color and texture coordination continues through all of the furnishings and fabrics.

Lately most of her projects have been turnkey … down to the coffee pot and the table settings. “Having done so many parade of homes, it is natural to follow through to the end with detail. It is also an amazing service for Grand County where people cannot easily be here to complete their homes. Homeowners want to walk in and just relax with the beds already made up. It is a ton of work, but a service much appreciated,” she says.

She has taken on some recent remodeling projects and said, “After 32 years in design I thought, why not! I know so much from working with the trades. It is creative to design with the artists and craftsmen on the job and listen to how they will implement my ideas throughout the project.”

“I have built some nice, solid relationships with my clients and we have learned to work together for a best possible outcome. I am now focusing on larger jobs. Building trusting relationships is essential. It is about the service and satisfaction of my client,” she adds.

Her most recent project was remodeling two homes on a ranch throughout the winter. In 120 days, the crew transformed these homes from white walls and simple oak features to a magnificent lodge-style home with deeper colors, log accents and new bathrooms. The kitchen was transformed by adding furniture pieces combined with richly painted and distressed oak cabinets instead of totally replacing the cabinets.

“It was awesome. We had 11,000 square feet done and furnished in that period of time,” she exclaims.

Marjorie says she would love to work with investors … so take note. She can add value and equity to a property … and the product knowledge hopefully speaks for itself in the end.
