Building a Better Environment

There are many excellent working relationships between builders and architects in the construction industry – each side adding to the success of the other one. But when the home designer and builder are one and the same, original ideas can be better integrated from start to finish using superior communication. This way, the homeowner’s details, preferences and budget requirements are less likely to get lost in translation, and the end result is a dream home designed and built exactly as it was envisioned.

Home Building Career
Mike Klebba’s home construction career began over two decades ago with an undergraduate degree in Environmental Design (Architecture) from Colorado University in Boulder. After college, he helped design large commercial buildings including Denver International Airport, San Jose Sharks’ Stadium and Aspen’s Maroon Creek Golf Course Clubhouse.

After a couple of years of doing architectural design, he wanted to get more involved in the building process, so he decided to go back to school for a Masters Degree in Construction Management from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. While studying at CSU, he also worked for the University teaching students how to use AutoCAD, a computer-aided drafting program.

The Best of Both Worlds
Klebba was given his first chance at combining design and project-management with a 22,000-square-foot commercial building in Denver. In 2001, Mike and his wife, Heather, decided to settle down in Grand County and establish Klebba Custom Builders (KCB). Since then, his building and design skills have graced the county, ranging from high-end residential to commercial construction and new-neighborhood development.

KCB builds and designs custom residential homes and commercial projects ranging from $25,000 to $25 million. This breadth of experience gives Klebba Custom Builders the ability to handle every kind of general contracting need. They offer complete custom design and building services including schematic concepts, 3D CAD drawings, general contracting and interior design.

Klebba Custom Builders is a member of the Grand County Builders Association. They participated in the 2009 Parade of Homes in Grand County, taking home three awards: Overall Judges Choice award; Best Builder over $2 million; and Best Interior Design over $2 million.

Sustainable Building
What does “Building a Better Environment” mean? “It means energy-efficient building practices that reduce our carbon footprint,” Klebba replies. “When you build exactly what the client wants, you rarely have any wasted, unusable space. This can reduce building size and needed materials. “KCB designs and builds to encompass the natural features of the environment which includes location of the building, and window and stone placement to take full advantage of solar gain. We design every home we build to fit the natural environment of the individual lot, integrating views, natural landscapes, solar aspects and weather patterns.” Klebba also believes that creating and maintaining great relationships makes for better environments. Building homes of exceptional quality ensures that his clients will be enchanted in their new home.

“I love being able to work with clients from the very beginning design stages and see it through to building completion. The process of listening to ideas and visions, and then creating a tangible space finished exactly to expectations, is something that can only be done through the design-build process.” ~ Mike Klebba

All Ears
Perhaps the one skill that has helped Mike Klebba climb to the top of the construction design and management field has been his ability to really listen to his clients. Many have learned the practical skills of the trade, but few have perfected the art of absorbing plans and wishes as well as Klebba.

“The most important thing I can do is listen to what my clients say – to hear their likes and dislikes, what is important to them. Family, food, sports, outdoors, entertaining, privacy – these are all factors I need to know in order to help them design and build the home of their dreams.”
